Opening the Tomb by DouglasRamsey Opening the Tomb by DouglasRamsey
Oil on illustration board, 30” x 40”

“And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.”
(Matthew 28:2-4 ESV)

I'm a little over-obsessed with accuracy that way but I'm glad you like it, thanks!

Thanks much! But Jesus himself isn’t actually out of the tomb yet in this painting. It’s a depiction of the moment when the angel rolls the stone back to open it for him.

Doug, Very impressed with the cast shadows of the soldiers. Getting better with each new image! (And for some reason this reminds me of Jim Starlin--with more realistic sense of anatomy).

Thanks, I was hesitant about going back to the well with this shadow effect, after having just used it in my last Christmas painting. But the two are kind of bookend companion pieces anyway and it’s a little hard to avoid when the focal point is also the light source. I’ve heard that Starlin was an artist but I don’t think I’ve actually seen his artwork. I only know him from the writing he did back in the 80’s.

Doug, I'm always a little afraid to reference comic artists from the past because not everyone will be familiar with them. But Jim Starlin was both writer and artist for a number of pretty good to really good comics in the 1970s into the 80s. You might look at Dreadstar, Death of Captain Marvel, and the Warlock saga to get an idea of what I'm talking about. While I don't agree with his philosophy (or what you get from his works) he could truly tell an engaging story. And his art had something about it that was really attractive to me--still is.

Yeah, I agree. I really liked Starlin’s writing. He was on Batman during most of the one year of my childhood that I actually had a subscription to the title.

I’ve seen a lot of resurrection paintings but only a few depictions of this particular moment. There is one by Rembrandt but it’s not one of his more successful efforts. The most powerful energetic resurrection pieces I’ve seen are Simon Bisley’s pencil drawings.

I tried to look up some of Simon's pencil drawings but couldn't find any.

This is the most powerful one I've seen:[link]

I don’t know if Bisley’s Bible illustrations are posted online. I have a book that collects them. He has a very exaggerated style and by "powerful and energetic" I mean its dynamic sense of movement, not necessarily its emotional impact. I think DiCianni’s work is very impressive too. I have a few quibbles with the historical accuracy of his mural but those are probably unfair to him, since his use of symbolic elements indicates he didn’t mean for it to be taken as a strictly literal depiction of the event.

I can never get enough of great Biblical art!
I think that the angel so easily and casually moving the stone has great dramatic effect.

Great! That sense of effortless power is exactly what I was trying to communicate so I’m really happy to hear that it comes through.
